IN THE BEGINNING... THERE WAS YARILO

The Vancouver-based Yarilo Music Ensemble, founded in 2003 by Bulgarian-Canadian pianist Anna Levy, honours the legacy of Russian-Canadian composer Nikolai Korndorf. Known for their explorations of contemporary repertoire and multimedia interpretations, the ensemble released a CD featuring Korndorf's "Smile of Maude Lewis" on Redshift Records in 2022, which made CBC's list of top recordings for the year. Their sound is a dynamic blend of classical and contemporary, often incorporating commissioned works from Canadian composers and exploring themes of social and artistic balance. Expect a thoughtfully curated journey through evocative soundscapes.
