Burnaby-based violinist Lache Cercel, a former "Artist of the People" in his native Romania, has pioneered the genre of Roma Jazz, merging Eastern European Roma music with Western jazz and classical traditions. His Roma Jazz Ensemble, featuring collaborators like guitarists Don Ogilvie and Stephen Nikleva, and vocalist Laura Crema, blends traditional folk with contemporary jazz. Their sound is a dynamic interplay of soulful melodies, virtuosic violin runs, and a rhythmic depth that honours the Roma spirit of resilience. It's a technically brilliant and deeply moving musical journey.
