Vancouver-born non-visual social practice artist Carmen Papalia, a recipient of the 2020 Sobey Art Award, explores themes of accessibility and interdependence through his work. His projects, often participatory, challenge visual primacy and advocate for new modes of orientation, as outlined in his 2015 Open Access manifesto. Papalia's recent "Weather for the Blind" events feature the Weather Warlock, an analog synthesizer built by Quintron that translates real-time weather conditions into a dynamic, unpredictable soundscape. It's an immersive, sensory experience that invites deep listening and a re-evaluation of our environment.
