Sacramento, California native Michael Jeffrey Clark gained worldwide recognition as a jazz and funk drummer, notably for his work with Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters in the 1970s, particularly on Hancock's 1974 album Thrust. Often referred to as the "Tony Williams of funk," Clark's syncopated approach on tracks like "Actual Proof" influenced generations of drummers. He has continued to release albums as a leader and collaborator, with recent works including Plays Herbie Hancock (2023) and Kosen Rufu (2023), and Kuon Ganjo (Time Without Beginning) (2026) which features an all-star quintet. His sound blends intricate, jazz-derived improvisation with deep, funky grooves and a powerful rhythmic drive. Expect a masterclass in dynamic, percussive storytelling.
