"And then I knew 'twas wind" is a 1992 chamber work by the influential Japanese contemporary classical composer Tōru Takemitsu, who was largely self-taught and gained international recognition with his 1957 Requiem for string orchestra. This piece, scored for flute, viola, and harp, draws its title from an Emily Dickinson poem and reflects Takemitsu's fascination with nature and subtle manipulation of instrumental timbre. His compositions often blend Eastern and Western influences, creating a shimmering, gestural soundscape that evokes the shifting qualities of wind and the human soul.
